The smell of pine in the Pacific Northwest: my first Proustian madeleine?

Finally, Spring

It reached the 70s today, Easter Monday, but Tuesday and Wednesday will be even nicer. The low- to mid-80s are possible on Wednesday.

Before and After Bard College

Does anyone remember the above photo? It was my first profile picture on Facebook. See my self-portraits taken before and after attending Bard College.

“Maybe the best student I’ve had… [Nicholas] write[s] extremely well.”
—Sid Bedingfield, journalism professor, former CNN executive, and father of Kate Bedingfield

While my peers in high school were out having fun, I was inside poring over The Chicago Manual of Style and books on English usage. By not only reading Newsweek cover-to-cover each week but also perusing the grammar, punctuation, and style, I was able to get 74 out of 75 questions correct on the English section of the ACT the first time I took the exam.

I attended Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, for a few years as a literature major, though I left without graduating. In the fall of 2019, I finished my studies at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities, graduating with a B.A. in English.
